Our Impact
Three initiatives working together to support veterans
PHAT began operating in 2017 and officially became a 501(C)(3) in 2019. The organization was founded by Eric Peterson after a fellow teammate took his own life after multiple tours overseas. As an organization, we believe that we live in a community that supports their veterans but may not know how to show it, and we have veterans that need that support but may not know how to ask. Our three focuses are:
Spartan Shield & Veteran Advocacy
PHAT partners with healthcare providers, law enforcement agencies, and fellow nonprofits to form a comprehensive support network for veterans. As a veteran-led organization, PHAT serves as what we call a "human algorithm for veteran resource connection" — a Veteran Advocate who understands veteran culture, speaks their language, and can navigate the complex landscape of available services.
Our advocates connect veterans in need with the right resources at the right time, whether that's mental health treatment, substance abuse programs, legal aid, housing, or crisis intervention. We recognize three categories of veterans who need support: those in active crisis, those slowly declining, and those who simply need a connection to their community.
- Crisis intervention and emergency support
- Mental health and substance abuse treatment navigation
- Benefits navigation and VA coordination
- Partnership with healthcare, law enforcement, and nonprofits
- Peer support through Spartan Shield groups
Troops on Trails & Veiled Valor
Through our Troops on Trails and Veiled Valor programs, we bring veterans together through outdoor recreational activities and community events. These programs combat isolation by creating meaningful connections in natural settings where veterans can relax, bond, and heal.
Activities include hunting, fishing, kayaking, golfing, mountain biking, camping, and hiking retreats. Each outing is designed to foster camaraderie, promote mental wellness, and remind veterans that they are part of a supportive community.
- Hunting, fishing, and kayaking trips
- Golfing and mountain biking outings
- Camping and hiking retreats
- Community integration events
- Peer support and mental health awareness
Veterans Village Initiative
Our flagship initiative aims to create a transitional tiny home lodging facility and treatment center for veterans. This vision combines safe, dignified housing with on-site treatment services and a supportive community environment.
In an innovative partnership with High School District 214's Architecture courses, students have been designing and building tiny homes as part of this vision — bridging generations while serving those who served us. The Veterans Village represents the future of how communities can support their veterans.
- Transitional tiny home lodging facility
- On-site treatment and counseling center
- Partnership with HS District 214 Architecture program
- Nature-based healing environment
- Pathway to independent living
